Valver radiator wanted

Post by peterwight »

I am in urgent need of a radiator for my 16V BX, and two suppliers have told me that they are no longer made or available. I can have the old one rebuilt, and might invest in doing so, BUT I ask members to rake through their spares, find one and rush it to me. Incidentally a new rad would have cost 106 GBP (if that fact spurs you to your spares) NB The valver radiator has a remote filler bottle, so hasnt got the fat tube clamped to one end (I've got two of those already). Urgent replies welcome, Peter Also on 0161 442 5424, 07580 805727 and peter.wight@talktalk.net

I'm not sure it is, think it's valver specific.

I've got a decent spare, but I was hoping to keep it for this very reason. It's there if you get really really stuck, but I don't really want to sell it  #-o

Pretty sure they are unique to the valver but ebay has alloy ones listed and you should easily be able to get a recore done or failing that I might be able to sort one out, pm me if you need me to try and source one

Thank you all for offers and advice; keep it coming. Yes Kitch I shall come to you if REALLY stuck but I've commissioned a local firm to build one: they've sourced the one firm in UK with a core so optimism is revived. Must look at ebay when their site is up again. Regards, PW

Also beware, the 1.6 radiator is the same as the 1.4 (150C engine, one fan) so cannot match a 16v type. Not sure it matches a 1.9 either but a Pug 1.6 16v engine type might - think Visa Gti etc.

The Visa GTI (and 17D) rad does use a remote reservoir but is smaller and different to the 16V. I don't really think any rad specialist should have problem finding a suitable core as long as one has good end tanks…

Re: Valver radiator NO LONGER wanted

Post by peterwight »

Thanks again everyone: I now have a secondhand radiator installed and functioning. By happy coincidence the firm that was going to make the new core (for completion by local firm)discovered that they do not after all have the appropriate template. I am therefore relieved of the obligastion to pay the enormous cost of that. So, Leobx 16V, thanks for the suggestion but I believe it cannot be done, at least in UK.
Dear Hilary, ebay France is clearly a resource to bear in mind, but dont those Chinese ones on our ebay look good!

Trouble is a: it's expensive, and b: because of the plastic end caps, a lot of reconditioners aren't happy to do them.

Just to confirm, the valver rad is definitely not the same as the TD. Valver upper outlet is 90 degrees out compared to TD, lower is straight rather than angled and pipes to oil filter cooler are in a different place. I expect you could fit a TD rad to a valver using TD hoses (except TD rads and hoses are harder to find than valver ones!) but not the other way round, because the turbo intake plumbing will be in the way.

I'm hoping to have a batch of TD rads made by the same firm that make the aluminium valver rads that are on ebay at the minute. Will update when I get news.
