Power steering changed to manuel?.

Post by Alastair » Thu Sep 24, 2015 6:22 am

Hi...... I have a leaking power steering rack, from the pinion I think. In the absence of a second hand steering rack I have noticed that manual ...... Non power steering..... racks seem to be available.... Has any one ever changed a car from power steering to non power steering and is anything strange involved?

Not as simple as you'd think I'm afraid. Not only is it a pig to change the rack in situ, but you'd also need to change the top half of the steering column and your FDV and pipework for non pas.

You're much better off repairing what you have.

Pinions are no longer available, I have a NOS one I can sell but it's expensive.
I have zero patience for your tedium.

You wouldn't want a diesel BX without PAS they're not nice.

Prior to about D plate ie 1987 the diesels had 'optional' power steering at least on the more basic models such as the 19RD. After some point around then it became standard because the engines are a bit heavy on the front for some to park the vehicle. The non PAS ratio is different and is fine on 1.4 or 1.6 petrols IMHO, you certainly get very direct 'feel' of the front tyre grip on the road.

Had friend who had a C plate without PAS and his wife had trouble parking and very low speed manouvering, mind you he was a heavy lad around 18 stone in old money...

I thought you could still get exchange PAS racks somewhere around the £250 mark?

You can get them reconditioned quite easily, there's plenty of people out there to try, Bourne Citroen for one.
