My 93' tzd disaster.. :(

Post by Djr88 »

I bought my TZD a few years ago and It has been parked up, so I finally started doing a few jobs on it about 6 months ago ready to take it for mot, I charged the battery up one day and refitted it but it didn't want to start, it was raining so I left it and was gonna have a look at it the following day and then got a right shock... heres a couple of pics before and after.

What a mess. Depressing too.
I seem to recall some posts a while back of something similar when an electrical fire started in the sunroof/central locking /overhead light area. I forget what the diagnosis was but clearly the area is not adequately fused.
I am sure you will be able to source the molten bits to put it back on the road again.

Yes I think that's where it started, its a damn shame as it had a very nice interior and its only done 101k. I'd like to try and repair it over the winter.

Ouch.... It's possible mice got into the roof lining and chewed the wiring, causing a short - when I bought the grey one it had been standing several years and the roof had been one big mouse nest. They'd chewed through all sorts of stuff including the rear washer hose. I had to change the whole roof lining. Fortunately it's not as difficult as you might think, so long as you can find a good replacement. If you're going to fix it up, I'd recommend getting all the burnt bits out and skipped ASAP - fixing it's one thing, getting rid of the smell of burnt plastic and rubber is likely to be the biggest problem.

Bugger! I've heard of this before, Leo Crossley had this happen to one of his 16v's but managed to repair it.

One of my BXs' had squirrels nesting in before I bought it. Seems like they only ate, or used the soundproofing on the bulkhead front side....

im breaking a tzd turbo with black trim if you need any interior bits, also have a complete interior inc door cards tho the front seats are from a tzi in grey in good cond, no headlining its gone. got most of the dash. i cant view your pics for some reason but im guessing you had a roof lining fire.

It was an electrical fire started by a water leak from the roof ariel starting a fire at the remote blip reciever then dripped down and burnt the seats, centre console, handbrake, headlining, visors, etc! i'll try and repost the pics.
