Will 17" alloys fit?

Post by Pluto » Sat Oct 31, 2015 12:43 am

Hi all,

I'm looking at some aftermarket alloy wheels for my BX19TGD Estate. The wheels are 7.0x17 ET25 4x108. If I was to fit these with 195/40/17 tyres, would they fit on the car without rubbing/fouling anything?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated

Thanks

On the potholes round here you would wreck two 17" wheels (and tyres) in year.....
Some have converted their C4s' to 15" steelies from 17" alloys because of this. The ride will also suffer as it's designed for the 14" rims.

You may find the rears will rub on the inner arches or run very close moreso if your rear arm bearings are worn. Its the width of the rim could cause issues not so much the diameter, and as Mr Tinkley says your ride will be compromised on such low frofile tyres, whilst some alloys enhance your bx sadly not very practical in some cases. But its your choice.

I doubt it,

looks like they would sit too proud and rub on the arch, I've entered the values for the standard 16v speedline there to compare it against.

Mike P's old valver for reference though:

Thanks for all the replies, maybe I'll stick with looking for a 16" rim with a 6" width to be on the safe side! I guess that way I can run a slightly bigger profile tyre too.

As much as I don't want to compromise the ride quality, I can't help thinking how much it would improve the looks!

It could be done, but they (and 16's to a lesser extent) will screw the ride up. I've been there on 16's - didn't last long! BX isn't exactly a refined car to start with, so the thumping, bumping and NVH only serve to get worse.

Now I'm really torn, your car looks awesome on 17's, It really fills out the arches! What's the ride like? Has it made it uncomfortable on long journeys?

Its hard to say as the suspension on this car is very very hard so I cant really tell a difference.

Theres no doubt a difference between 14" and 17" but i think the biggest difference lies in tire choice and not so much the size.

However the car feels much more planted and on a 16valve the improved grip makes a huge difference.

Just remember to choose a set of light weight rims and not those cheap ones that weighs a ton.

Thanks for the info, that's definitely given me some food for thought! Last question, what tyre size have you got and do you get any rubbing at all?

I'm assuming the space under the arches of my tgd is the same as a 16v. I had pretty much decided to stick with the standard setup until you posted a picture of yours. It's clearly bringing out the boy racer in me!

17's look great, but handle dreadfully. With the 205/40 R17's on mine, its harsh, unwilling to turn and tram lines on the motorway.

On the 16v you can trim the lip on the arches to give you a little more room when the arms start to fail. I found even with this the remaining lip touches the tyre when fully sat down. Something that destroyed a tyre side wall when i had to bump start it one day!

The car definitely feels best with the original 14's, I definitely prefer them over my 15's

I've tried switching wheels from the originals on my 16v, and I've gone back to the OE ones every time. There's no point being different for the sake of being different, especially when the originals work the best.

After looking into this I think I'm going to have to agree! There is no denying that bigger wheels improve the look of the car, but as it seems to have such a huge impact on the ride quality I'm going to stick with the original 14" steelies for now. I guess I'll save money on tyres too!

Nice to see all the pictures of the cars rolling on 17's though!
