Re: GT MOT Pass!
He did say she's running a bit lean so needs a tweak of the newly rebuilt carb.
Lots of Motors, mostly semi broken....

Re: GT MOT Pass!
That's the plan. A few small adjustments and it should be good to go, I did 867 miles in it last year!
It will be at the national
Will tax it tomorrow.

They were only 0.7 apparently so running quite weak, although it still pulled like a train!

Re: GT MOT Pass!
Go steady, running lean melts valves! On tickover, you can adjust the mixture, but on the move and under load, the mixture is governed by the choke & jet sizes etc. It should be fine, if the carb is all standard spec and in healthy condition. If it's just lean on tickover, it'll just run a bit hot when idling, and it's easy to adjust it, but lean on the move is a bad thing, so I'd check that out personally. Far worse than running rich.Tim Leech wrote:They were only 0.7 apparently so running quite weak, although it still pulled like a train!

Re: GT MOT Pass!
Hi Kitch, thanks for that, I think as you say it may be just the idle is a tad lean, as its drives better than ever and is not hesitant and goes very well indeed!
My mate who rebuilt the carb is going to set the idle up for me.
We didn't replace any jets, just cleaned them so it should be ok.

I'm guessing he checked the jet sizes when he rebuilt the carb? If so, it'll probably just be the idle that's lean.Tim Leech wrote:Hi Kitch, thanks for that, I think as you say it may be just the idle is a tad lean, as its drives better than ever and is not hesitant and goes very well indeed!

I thought Dad's GT went well, until we put it on the dyno and found out 30 French ponies had escaped from the field! It'll go even better when it's finished

Re: GT MOT Pass!
0.75 is what my auto gave to the previous owner. Changing cam belt and plugs lowered this to 0.4 still a bit high IMHO - the Athena has been 0.15'ish at idle. Note this is better than a '09 C4 1.6.....Kitch wrote:Go steady, running lean melts valves! I know the Haynes states 1.5% as standard, and the permissable limit is 3.5%. The MOT guys who did my 1.4, kept seeing it year after year, after they told me it was too lean 'You'll burn the engine up mate', they had to admit it did nothing of the sort...
So don't worry about lean idle, it's the missing ponies much higher up the rev range I need to hunt for...
The idle mixture screw in my Athena carb is impossible to adjust btw it just turns and turns and turns, can't lock it in or extract, very weird, still it seems to run OK.... Drilled out yet another blanking plug on a Keihin carb (3.5Hp outboard) to get the mixture screw out for cleaning - sodding Californians....
