Not bx tech but Relay van issue

Post by rutter123 » Sat Aug 27, 2016 12:03 pm

Just of lately this week my 2008 LWB Relay van has developed an intermmitent prob with the PAS, the steering stiffens up occasionally then on turning seems to release (with a pop) and all is back to normal, i have also noticed when this happens sometimes it seems that the brakes also seem to suffer also as if i loose the effectiveness of the brake servo, along with this the accelerator pedal seems to go stiff for a brief second as if something is blocking the system, i have checked the obvious things such as the pump belt which is tight and the level of PAS fluid which is ok and of good colour. This does seem to happen moreso with a load on rather than when empty, managed to get home the 100 miles yesterday with no issues but nonetheless quite frightening when the PAS cuts out on a bend, not being that familiar with this vehicle im wondering if there is some sort of vacuum unit that links these parts, any pointers would be good.
I will be checking over all the steering components such as track rod ends, strut tops etc and running a test on the PAS pump to see if its making any strange noises or poss running weak.

IIRC correctly the power steering on a Relay is electric so you need to be looking for a dodgy contact or relay or the electric pump is on it's way out.

Mine is defo pump driven as there is a PAS pump ( belt driven) on the bottom left hand side of the engine, i suspect i may have 2 separate issues with this van now, PAS and vacuum pump issues
