Correct oil pressure reading for BX Gti 8v manual

Post by benzbug »

Hi everybody, new member here.

I've just bought a 1989 BX19 GTi 8v manual with only 57000 miles on it. I drove it 175 miles home today and it is magnificent, plus absolutely everything seems to work!

I had two of them from new in 1990 and 1991 (preceded by a 1985 BX 14RE and a 1987 BX 19TRS) and have missed them ever since.

My memory has faded after a 23 year layoff, so my question (which doesn't seem to be answered by the handbook) is simple: What is an acceptable oil pressure reading for a healthy engine which has had a recent oil and filter change? When fully warmed up mine reads around 2 at idle and around 5.5 at 65mph (about 3500 rpm I think). Is that OK?

Thanks and regards
Pete

Hi Pete

You're lucky that your oil pressure sensor even gives a reading! Mine is rather temperamental - tends to only come into life when it's damp outside. When it does work though, it provides similar readings to yours. When the lights or rear heated screen are on though, it increases a couple of bars...

I'd say as long as your warning light doesn't come on, you're fine :)

Thanks Rob, that's reassuring. Have done over 400 miles now and it's gorgeous :D :D

The oil pressure gauge in a BX is really just there for entertainment!

For XU9 Haynes manual (your engine familly) only says min 4,5 bar at 4000 rpm, warning at 0,8 bar.
For XUDs (diesels) it says min 2.5 bar at 800 rpm.

You are surely at the right ballpark.

That is absolutely perfect, you appear to have 'new car panic syndrome' , I think we all worry after just purchasing a second hand car in case we have bought someone else's problems.Relax and enjoy :-)

Thanks for the reassurance folks. I was already sleeping well, but now I can hardly get out of bed at all - except to go and drive my BX of course!!
