BX wheel cover mount rings - remove for powder coating wheel?
Powder coating wheels planned to eliminate rust - but the wheel cover plastic rings would have to be removed. Is that possible without damaging them? Are they clipped in?

Oh, you probably mean series 1 GT-type wheel covers with separate rings that stay in the rim. Yes, they are just a tight fit. Very tight if the rust has gone under them. Spray a litlle bit of WD40 or whatever (I usually use the latter) in the seam between the ring and the rim and try to remove them gently the next day.

Thank you! I used a bit of WD-40 and some PB Blaster, then a long (0.5 m) pry bar to gently lift the rings out of the wheel rim. These wheels are on an '88 GTI. The local powder coating shop price was 75 USD for the spare wheel. They blast it to bare metal before coating. I appreciate the help.
