cracking noise

Post by pwykes »

Hello chaps,

When going over a very bumpy road there is a cracking sound coming from the rear suspension, it sounds a bit like when you drive over a loose manhole cover. i have had it on the ramps and checked the subframe mounts - all look good, i suspect the noise is coming from the bearing arms (50kmiles since last change) as anybody had any experience of this?

Thanks Phil.

With some bodies jumping in the boot it appears as the suspension goes down it makes a click, then on the way back it makes a clack noise

Almost certainly the rear suspension arm bearings, usually starts with a pinging or clonking on the rise, the taper roller bearings break up and cause these noises. Quite an easy DIY job. Dependant on the quality of bearings used some cheaper kits may not last long.

I can supply you with reconditioned rear radius arms, with quality new bearings, seals, sleeve, spacers and mounting bolt, for non ABS, ready to fit for £110 per side on an exchange basis providing yours are serviceable.

Thanks for the info, but I will run it until it gets extreme then take it off the road for a year.

Cheers phil.

Prob won't be too much longer and the tyres will start to rub on the inner arches.

If you keep using the BX without repairing the arms you may damage the arms. They will then require more than just a bearing change.
It is an easy and inexpensive job to change them. It takes me 2 to 4 hours per side. You will not need a year to do the job. The only complication is if ABS is fitted as you will have to disconnect the leads under the rear seat and feed them through.
