Evening,
I pulled the nearside driveshaft on my GTi 4x4 today with a view to changing it - I had bought a pair of new GTi shafts.
The shafts appear to be reversed, i.e. long shaft on the nearside, short shaft on offside, out of the side of the transfer box(?). The new long shaft I had bought was 1.5cms shorter than the old one so I put the old one back in.
Does anyone know where I can get the correct shaft, or if I can use the slightly shorter shaft?
Cheers
John

Re: 4x4 driveshafts
there's a guy on ebay selling some rear ones, you could message him to see if he's got the front ones.

Re: 4x4 driveshafts
Still had no joy on the shafts. My contact in France came up with nothing. I've come to the conclusion that I'll have to pull both shafts and send them off to be re-conned. Any recommendations?
Also can anyone confirm that there is a carrier bearing on the nearside shaft in the side of the gearbox on the 4x4?

Re: 4x4 driveshafts
My nsf drive shaft had the remains of a rubber seal on it. I bought a brand new NOS driveshaft off ebay a couple of years ago and that had a seal on it with the sealing lip on the outer edge, it seems that this seal supports the driveshaft. I had a phosphor bronze bush made for mine which has been on it for the last 6 years, i prefer it to the proper seal. There is a tiny weep from it because there is no sealing arrangement but it's very small because the transfer box oil level is lower.

Re: 4x4 driveshafts
Because of the lack of a seal on this shaft and on the transfer box spline i fitted an undertray from a grand punto to keep any waterspray away, although my transfer box spline is now fully sealed and weatherproof.

Re: 4x4 driveshafts
Thank you Barry, that's very useful. In theory if I get the shaft rebuilt and obtain a new seal all will be well.
I suppose that there's a similar seal on the osf? Seems curious that Citroen didn't fit a carrier bearing.

Re: 4x4 driveshafts
I realise that this was posted a few months ago now, However I was messing with some driveshafts for my car when I as putting the 4x4 system on it, and the outer halfs of the GTI 4x4 front driveshafts were the same as a 1.7 n/a diesel (with a manual gearbox), so if you need to then maybe you'll be able to obtain some and repair your original shafts with them. I tried the same thing with the automatic shafts out of my car, but they turned out to be smaller (and had smaller inner CV joints).
The Peugeot 405 4x4 GTI 16V shafts had the same CV joints as the BX 4x4, but the actual shafts are longer. You can't even use the inner shaft parts off the Peugeot front shafts unless you're using the Peugeot transfer box because they're different (one is slightly longer and the other slightly shorter).
As far as I remember, all the parts off the rear shafts are the same, apart from the shafts themselves, which are longer.
Hope that helps.

Re: 4x4 driveshafts
Thank you for that. We've had another boy so I've not been here for a while. I'm working on my Triumph next so the BX has taken a back seat for the moment...
