TZD - Interior light fault
My 92 TZD has developed a fault with the interior lighting. Began to play up intermitantly a couple weeks ago where the interior lights would fail to illuminate after opening drivers door. Initially suspected door switch, however opening any of the remaining doors has no effect on the problem. The interior lights all work perfectly if switched on manually within the car. Is there a timed relay somewhere which may be at fault? Has anyone else experienced this? All help much appreciated.

The spring tag festoon bulb holders can play up, I would take the bulbs out and bend the tags slightly to make the bulb a tighter fit first of all before looking any deeper.

Re: TZD - Interior light fault
If it's both lights simultaneously, I'd be looking at the timer relay (behind the dash, between glove box and coin box). Not known them to be a common fail, but relays can and do wear out.

I think Jaba has been experiencing the same problem but in his case it fixed itself.

Re: TZD - Interior light fault
I once saw something like this myself. The GTI (and I believe the TZD) use a timed relay box for the interior lights, and they didn't work correctly. It turned out that one of the earth connecting plug was loose behind the steering wheel. Once this was reconnected properly it worked fine. Perhaps this is your issue? Just pull the lower steering column cover off and have a look.
Hope that helps.

Having the same problem with my TZD at the moment, and thinking about it, it stems from about the same time as I removed the steering column to stake the lower bearing in place. So I suspect I might have disturbed the connection - will check!
