Bx 1.9i Wont Rev up and engine check light on

Starts fine, idles high, Wont Rev up unless I’m very gentle, appears to run Rich, if I accelerate hard it cuts out but restarts immediately

This is a TZi with or without a cat? It is possible to get error codes from the ECU and this would point you in the right direction.

Yes TZI with a cat, general consensus is coolant temp sensor or possibly a dying fuel pump.

As for reading error codes, due to the age of it I am not sure anyone has the right equipment.

Tim checking the codes needs no equipment, you just need the Bosch fault finding info to hand then you get it into readout mode by earthing briefly pin 2 of the diagnostic plug or pin 13 of ECU and then record the sequence of blinks on the K light.
You can measure the resistance of the coolant sensor and compare it what it should be from a table in the Bosch fault finding info. Cold 10 deg = 4kohm
hot 80 = 290-370 i.e. resistance decreases with temperature rise.
A good test would be to disconnect the sensor and see if it makes a difference.
I would add to the list fuel pressure regulator,fuel filter, lambda sensor, cat possibly, flow meter. In other words anything really.
I have a list of the fault codes here. For example coolant temp is 14, 51 is oxygen sensor.
This info must be online somewhere. Maybe on Gabor's Citroen site.

Agree with all this engine management sensor checking. Also, would add the possibility that the Cat could have broken up and now being a restriction in the exhaust system. I think on a 1991 car you can bin the Cat?

The exhaust seems clear and and the smoke comes out easily, Ill start with the sensor and move on from their

yes the car is a 1991 so technically doesn't need a cat, but it does have a lambda probe.

I have a spare airflow meter which I think Jaba sold me to try.
