HELP PLEASE *** BX19 Hydraulic oil leak

Post by seza »

Hi all,

Great forum, thanks to all those that made it possible,
I am new to the BX - recently I started to work on a 1993 BX19 TXD which has not moved for few years,
all worked ok incl the hydraulic sys but I noticed the warning light about LHM level,
as soon as I topped the level (gone bit over the max) a leak developed on a pipe
on the passenger side at the bottom of the car?
would over filling the tank cause such a leak?
I have not had a chance to take a closer look as to where the pipe is going/coming from,

any thoughts will be greatly appreciated,

thanks

In a word, no. Overfilling the LHM tank will not cause it to start leaking, unless it's overflowing from the top of the tank.

You'll need to get underneath the car (safety first, make sure that it's supported on axle stands, ramps or over a pit!) and have a look what's actually leaking. It could be a rubber or plastic return pipe, or it could be a high pressure metal line.

Until you know what's leaking then it's just a guessing game as there are lots of pipes under the car.

Hope that helps.

Thanks David,
I don't think the leaky pipe was/is under pressure because it was only drips (on average 2 to 3 drips per second),
yeah you right a closer look will shed more light on the matter.

Good morning all,
after bit of internet searching and from this venerable forum I learnt about the
dreaded "octopus" ... that is my problem,
I am not a mechanic by any stretch ... any work that involves repositioning the engine scares me,
having said that I am willing to give it a shot and save this otherwise beautiful ol girl,

those of yous who undertook the job - what do you rekon?

It is possible to do in situ but a lot easier with the engine out as the octopus sits just atop the subframe, access is fiddly but I found a pair of extra long nose pliers with a cranked end quite useful.
The rest is pretty straightforward just do one pipe at a time and you'll be good and aching the next day.
Would recommend a thorough steam clean of the engine bay and subframe beforehand.

Excellent! One more thing to check on the ramp before I buy a BX. Thanks!
