alternator removal on 1700 tzd Turbo

Post by womble3go »

Hi All,
I need to remove my alternator from a 1993 1700 tzd turbo, last time I did one I had to take rad out as could not see how to get it the engine bay with out.

Is there a way to do this, I have done it on a straight 1900 with easy.

Thank for the help.

I've never pulled the alternator out on a TD, however surely it can’t be that hard.

Firstly, have you tried removing the top panel that holds the radiator in place to give yourself more room? I know that it'll only give you another 1-2 cm at the most, but sometimes it's all you need. Otherwise, have you got a large trolley jack to rest the engine on while you remove the upper engine mount? You'll then be able to manoeuvre the engine, al least to some degree, to hopefully give yourself enough room to remove it.

Hope that helps.

It is quite easy when you know how and have done it before.
Remove the headlight and you can manoeuvre it upwards and out while getting it into a vertical trajectory.

For the 15mins it takes take the rad out, saves damaging the rad too, just ensure you bleed the system properly when u refill.

You have to take out the headlight cos it comes out through the opening. Not difficult.

Hi All, Thank you for the help, final had the time and weather and got the old one out and replacement in, more than once as I forgot to check the number of grovel on the belt till I tried to fit the belt.

The head light hole is the way to do this.
