No fast idle on cold start (91 1.6)

Post by Pcheaven »

Seems Like a simple issue. I hope

From cold start the engine does not fast idle and requires me to hold accelerator depressed a little for a while.

Are there any know issues/ fixes before I consider a carb refurb. After all it’s 30 years old.

I presume you have the autochoke rather than having forgotten to pull the manual choke handle out? :D

I never suffered it myself but heard it discussed a lot. I did a little search on here for “autochoke” and these two seem pretty relevant:

Defiantly an auto choke. :)

I have read loads on here. Quite interesting.
Could be a pain to resolve.
I will start with the vacuum pipes and see if it’s possible to manually throw the choke just to check the carb and eliminate the auto choke mechanism.

I can’t help much further as the autochoke was replaced with manual on my 16 and the two 14s were built manual.

Hopefully you get a quick result.

I located the fast idle screw, and gave it an 1/8th of a turn. that appears to have sorted the problem. cold idle is now just over 1100.

Have no idea what the black cover on the auto choke does though. can't find it mentioned in the Haynes that just arrived. It appears to have a small loop vacuum pipe connected to black housing.
