Does the lhm resevoir have any seals?

Post by Pcheaven »

My tank appears to be weeping lhm between the tank itself and the octopus fitting that accepts all the pipes.
It’s a tiny leak. But a leak none the less

Before I disassemble. I just wanted to ask, is there a seal here that may need replacing.

I dont want to take it apart only to find I need a spare part?

Weirdly I couldn’t find any videos or pictures showing a tank disassemble and clean that might answer my question.

Cheers all

#5 here.
Still showing available from Citroen.
It's the same part as fitted to Xantia and XM. These eventually crack and leak.

The seal isn’t meant to be 100% oil-proof because the tank is never meant to be filled that high. If your tank is leaking at the seal then it means you’ve overfilled the tank...

Nope the levels are perfect - as checked when the suspension is high.

The seals do leak with age.
They shrink, harden and can crack, and as fluid sloshes around in the tank, some can weep out.
Affects both the original metal and the later plastic LHM tanks.

Makes sense to me. Otherwise why would there be seals in the first place.

The primary purpose of the seal is to stop dirt getting in. Its secondary function is to stop LHM leaking out too much while it’s sloshing around the tank, but the level of the LHM when the car is in its lowest position and the HP pressure released (ie when as much fluid is back in the tank as possible) should never be above the level of the seal.

The seal and input output manifold is held down by what is effectively a piece of bent metal rod. Is this in place and under tension correctly?

This has got me thinking because mine has always had a slight LHM weep there and I have considered it as normal. If you manage to cure yours with a new seal then I will have to get a replacement too.

Exactly the same arrangement on XM, but a plastic tank.
A new seal (same pt.no. as BX) cured the leak completely.
The metal rod should bear down tightly on the plastic assembly.
Good bit of scope for weepage on that top - lots of return hoses, one here just a push-fit rubber elbow.

Will let you know when after I have had chance to install and test.

Fingers crossed.
