FYI's - if you are bidding on the 4x4 @ Manor park auctions today

Post by Pcheaven »

just a small FYI, in case you are bidding - I was / am / still undecided / considering bidding

Manor Park kindly sent me over an invoice that relates to a possible cam change on the vehicle.

Sadly, the invoice is dated 2011, its only for a cam belt with no tensioner or pump etc, and the invoice states a ZX 1.8, and not a BX 1.9 GTI

I don't think they are the same cam belts!,but either way the invoice implies the belt was changed 10 years ago.

So most likely it will need a new belt kit

As a by the by, Manor park auctions have been very helpful and responsive to my queries.

Oh, the reserve / minimum bid is £4600, excluding buyers premium of 15% - is this fair, or ambitious. I don't really know.

I think 15% commission is prob about right, with online bidding I reckon you're gonna be in it for £6000,a lot of dosh for what could be a potential money pit, but it's your money, and best of luck.

I agree. 6k is too much. Unless you have spare parts and the time and tools to do clutch and cam belt etc

Not with standing the fragile 4x4 parts. Which I understand are not available at any price.

Not for me.
I would risk around 3k all in.

Still. Will watch with interest. As well as the other 4x4 owner who has their car in an upcoming auction...

provisionally sold at hammer for £5000 - this bid to be offered for the seller to accept, as it was below the reserve price

Blimey Five grand for a BX unseen and with unknown history. One for the speculators.
I wonder what a good known one with a test drive in a private sale would go for?

I think Brad's 4x4 next month would be a much better bet.

There is no denying Brads looks very good in the many pictures he kindly sent me. That said so was the one at auction. It had huge amount of history and receipts.
Pretty sure the final bid was by someone in the room. So they definitely saw it

I think 5k is still a bit rich, the cost of a cambelt would be the least of my worries as I'm sure replacing the potentially worn out 4x4 drive train could easily swallow up another 5k, that's if you can source parts.

BX 4x4 ? Personal thoughts...

The idea of having one of the few remaining working 4x4's is an attractive one, from the point of view of rarity.
Not quite as rare as a factory's one-off prototype (eg the Rover V8 P6BS, with its combined gearbox and rear diff and unique body), but similar challenges and potential costs.

Then there's the question of any driving advantages that could be had. Assuming climbing terrain and unmade and waterlogged track and riverbed isn't on the menu, there aren't many routes that a 2WD BX won't gobble up with ease, ride and grip.

OK, the GTi will be swift, especially the 16v, but this will be partly blunted by the extra weight and altered gearing of the 4x4 equipment. If speed and glue-like road holding is the goal, then the 2WD has it in spades. If torque and lugging-power is the aim, then it surely has to be a Citroen diesel.

Of course, it's all a personal choice. You will though, in the absence of extensive personal mechanical ability, a good workshop resource, and lots of time, need a very deep and elastic pocket.

I got to know why a BX 4x4 has seats with back rests. That was when driving a downhill-skiing hill. From bottom up.. An FWD surely couldn't do that. Also it's quite funny in the wintertime when you have a newish audi A6 4WD next to you on the traffic lights, and it's slippery as hell. The face of the audi driver when he realizes he can't getaway from a 30 years older Citroen until 50mph... Surely would buy again just for the fun factor :D
