BX16 auto box oil cooler

Post by bowei001 »

I had to take my autobox oil cooler off to see if it was leaking (turns out it wasn't!) and I need the 2 oil seals to put it back. I don't fancy using the old ones unless I can really help it. The original part numbers seem to be 95 610 721 (big seal) and 95 610 722 (small seal).
Citroen can't supply them any more and I've tried most of the usual sources. Does anyone have any lying around or can anyone suggest a source? My last resort will be to have them made to order but the exact thickness may be a problem as the originals have been squashed over the last 35 years.
Any help/suggestions will be very gratefully received.
Ian

Hi Ian,

Hopefully you wont have to go to the trouble of having anything made as the automatic gearbox is a ZF 4HP14 isn't it, and used on many cars?

I'd recommend contating JPAT +44 (0)1934 853956 or info@jpat.co.uk as they seem to list the cooler part itself in their parts diagram PDF https://www.jpat.co.uk/uploads/1/0/3/5/ ... _4hp18.pdf on page 2. I would have hoped that they can also supply the seals. Fingers crossed anyway!

Also, looking at this parts catalogue, there is an alternative number for you to search for, although that has the part numbers one digit off from what you posted for the "small seal":
item 09, big seal 95610721 or 1104 21 (AUT GR-BX OIL-WATER DIST GASKT)
item 08, small seal 95610720 or 2275 27 (AGB PLUG SEAL, 20X26-1,5)

https://catalogs.ssg.asia/citroen/?lang ... aWVyPT0%3D

Also automaticchoice.com seem to list two of the seals that go between the case and the cooler according to this PDF https://www.automaticchoice.com/uploads ... p14.pdfand searching for the parts ( on their website. Also, the thickness of the seal does seem to change in thickness over time, going from 4.83mm from 1983 to 3.64mm in 1992. I can't see the seal for the banjo-bolt on this website though. 4HP14.RUB02 and 4HP14.RUB01 seem to be "contact us" when searched on their website

And as another lead, how about contacting a ZF Aftermarket place and telling them that you need the seals from pg. 3 of this diagram https://aftermarket.zf.com/remotemedia/ ... -4hp14.pdf (not quite for a BX so you may fall foul of the change in thickness mentioned above)

James,
Amazing! I phoned JPAT and spoke to a man called Bruce who was extremely helpful. They have the gaskets but, even better, he contacted ZF in Germany and I have a complete new oil cooler coming (quite expensive but the old girl is worth it).
Thanks for all the information.

Fantastic news?

Probably a good idea on the cooler. I had the same box (or maybe that’s an HP18, but basically very similar) on a 480 die and it was the oil cooler that started it all off.

Are you giving the oil a good triple-flush now and again?

I will be flushing it out several times when it is up and running. It's a pity that a drain plug wasn't fitted to get all the oil out at one go. Looks like I'll be getting a couple of gallons of Detron2 soon.

Excellent. I’m rather terrified of the boxes after mine went bang so glad to hear you know what you are doing.

I think the same box on the 480 has two drain plugs: one for the pan and one for the differential… keep your eyes peeled and best of luck!

Thanks for the diagram, I'll get the car on high lift and have a good look around for drain plugs.
