1.8TD Turbo repair and improvement. Access?

Post by assembled »

Hi all, yesterday I tried to check what is going on with my turbo because the car seems to lack power and put out some black smoke and higher revs under load. I found that wastegate was stuck closed and managed to loosen it up, but have not had a chance to test the car. I have also installed wastegate bleed valve. Or attempted at it - could not reach the hose coming from the top side of the turbo and now it is just open. Is there any chance of better access from the top side of the engine with parts removed for access?

The car is left-hand-drive, TZD Turbo with Garrett turbocharger.

Sometimes you have to swing the engine forward a bit to get access to the turbo. To do this I support the engine on the RHS from above and remove the link from the engine to the engine mount then simply roll the car back a bit pulling the engine forward to give better access clearance.
Not very helpful advice I know. but if you ever have to remove the turbo it is what you have to do I have found.

Thanks. Haynes manual for Citroen diesels and French BX Diesel manual agree with you. Undoing the lower mount link allows engine to move lean a bit. It also suggests to undo upper engine mount, remove radiator and move the engine forward top side as well. But I managed to plug the hose that I cut with some nylon tubing and now I have most of them routed to the top of the engine. One more (feed for wastegate bleed T peace) and I will have them all on top. Longer tubes will not improve control, but not perfect is better than broken.

Thanks again.
