Oil level/pressure gauge problem

Hi, I have a 1991 BX 19 TGD. when I turn the ignition the needle in the oil gauge moves to the far right showing the oil level I believe as it’s a dual level and pressure combination gauge? Then when I turn the actual engine on the needle jumps to the far left in the red and sits there doesn’t move and no red dot light. The center warning lights come on too “STOP” and a few of the other below. But after idling for a few minutes and I give it a little rev the center warning lights go off. The oil gauge sits on the left had side of the dial in the red. I read on here it seems to be a common issue with gauges that go wrong on the BX. Does anyone have any idea what might be my problem? Only the GTi and 16v models had the dual function level and pressure gauge as standard. On lower models, the gauge has no function whatsoever once it has stopped showing the level, so as long as the oil pressure light is out when the engine is running, you don't have an issue.
The STOP light is triggered by several sensors, overheating, low hydraulic pressure/level, low oil pressure. The other warning lights are all illuminated with the low oil pressure light as a test function; my only concern is that it seemingly takes a few minutes for all the lights to go out. Oil pressure should be reached almost instantaneously, and hydraulic pressure within 30 seconds or so.

Oh interesting, I have checked my oil level and that’s perfect, and your saying my oil guage only shows my oil level and not pressure am I correct. Perhaps my oil gauge sensor or some wiring is faulty as the needle moves with ignition, then once engine started it shoots to the left (on the red end of the illuminated line behind the needle, but without a red dot light turning on). And perhaps it is taking a while to get to the right pressure and the initial “stop” and other warning lights are accurate?

You should find the oil level indication will go to the left of the gauge weather the engine is started or not, it only indicates for a few seconds. I believe the GTi has a level gauge and and a seperate one for pressure.

Oh okay that’s interesting. I have read somewhere online as my dial doesn’t have numbers it just shows the oil level, and that once the engine is started the reading is cancelled and the dial sits normally on the left? Then the little red dot lights up if the pressure is wrong? Does this sound right

Yes, as everyone else has said, you’ve only got the level clock in your car; not the combined pressure & level clock, it’ll move to the right when the ignition is turned on, but cancel & stay to the left otherwise. The level sensors aren’t really reliable after a few years in any case, so most likely, it’ll always show as full, even if it isn’t.

Just make sure the circle red light in the top left corner illuminates when the ignition is on, but extinguishes when the engine is started. If that’s the case, it’s working correctly.
