General problems with my Millesime

Post by MillesimeEnjoyer »

Hello i am a quite new owner of a BX, i have been a lifelong enjoyer of citroen 2cv's and so ive bought a bx as my first car!.

however there are a few things i have questions about:

Alot of white smoke from the exhaust even when the engine is warm when stationairy/ low rpm (1000-3000 rpm) and no it does not use coolant. there is also A LOT of white sludge thats forming in the oil refill cap, ive cleaned most of it but it keeps coming back!

High fuel consumption, at least i think it has because im averaging 9km per 1 litre of fuel.

Kinda gutless power, above 4000 rpm it feels like the engine is being held back. almost as if the catalitic converter is clogged.

A soft but noticable whine from the cam belt and rapid ticking from the HP pump.

If anyone knows a solution to these problems i would be very happy!

Do i need to clean my distributor or something with my ignition?

thank you in advance! :D

Well done for choosing a BX, you are in good company here.
I have never bought a BX that does not have some things in need of attention and yours does not seem to be an exception.

The white sludge of emulsified oil and water is sort of normal in the winter months for cars used for short journeys. I would think it a good idea to do an oil change as well as a cambelt change too unless you know both have been done recently and properly. Make sure you get the cambelt timing spot on, check the belt timing anyway.
Your performance issue could be so many things and if you have a cat fitted then something there could be problematic. An exhaust gas CO and hydrocarbons check might be revealing. Check/adjust the ignition timing too.
White smoke is water vapour in the exhaust - normal for a cold engine in winter but not after the engine and exhaust have heated up fully.

For the other problems replace the accumulator sphere to begin with then if still clicking start looking for excessive hydraulic leakback within the system. Often it is the brake doseur valve that is worn doing this.

I think you will be busy sorting it out for quite a while so good luck.

Thanks Jaba for the response.

i have done the cam belt on my own and seems to be in place correctly, i will refresh the oil though. i have ordered a new accumulator sphere and will be installing that very soon. how do you check for leakback though?

i do have a cat fitted, i will do a co reading to see if i see something unusual, what is the standard value i should be looking for?

thanks in advance!

also, i have recently bought 4 good GTI wheels. however i see that they require different bolts to mount the wheel.

where can i find a full set since its not very clear for me, it seems that 205 gti bolts will fit but im not sure.

These are difficult to find these days. You have to scour the internet, you might have more luck in France. The bolts have a flat washer are 130 long and M12x1.25 (I think).
They look like this: https://www.chevronics.co.uk/product/xm ... lt-thread/
CX bolts fit as well. Good luck finding them........

On the assumption that they are the same as the bolts used with series 1 Xantia alloy wheels (series 2 Xantias used tapered bolts), then you could ask Chris who is disposing of Xantia parts on FCF https://frenchcarforum.co.uk/forum/view ... hp?t=86734 . Most of his stash of parts came from Citrojim, who broke at least one Xantia V6 with those bolts.

Sorry for typo above.
Thread length is 43mm with a flat washer against the wheel and definitely not tapered.

Hello, ive found some potential bolts that will fit.

Thread is 49mm long and is M12x1.25
Only concern is that thicker upper part of the thread, maybe its too wide?

Thanks in advance!

Its not the correct bolt. Its a lot longer and that top thread may not fit through the wheel and the taper should not be there. It may of course do the job - you could just buy one and try it. Better and safer to have the correct bolt though.

Ive found another option, and i got my wheels back from the painter today!

The bolts on that picture are for a CX turbo, maybe that will work?

Cost around 9€ a piece.
