Driveshaft Nut size!

Hey, its not only the wettest day ever but I am trying to change the outer CV boot on my 16V. Ok i though until I am really struggling to get a socket to fit. Ive tried a 34mm and a 36mm, on too small and one too big. Trying to find somewhere that does a 35mm is a hard task too!
What size socket do i need?!

Factory fitted is 35mm (1-3/8 or 11/8 inch)

A 34mm socket will positively not fit. A 36mm socket will slip when you are steamed up with 3/4" tommy bar etc. - and then you will positively hurt yourself

I only have a 36mm one, fortunately its a six sided one so cannot slip round and works ok, they are bloody tight though.

1 3/8" as Anders suggests. Readily available.

Some others you might be needing:
Crank pulley: 22mm
Rear arms: 24mm
Diesel injector: 27mm
Strut nut : 36mm
And the head bolts are a T55 spline drive (Torx) bit.

hmmm, i always get so confused here but before i look stupid answer me this;

Is it the front hub nut or rear hub nut which is the larger?

And what is the size for the other one?

I tried the 36mm after finding it hard to get a 35mm. Ill try looking for an imperial size one. The 36mm resulted in the following:

oops, becoming an expensive job in just tools, not parts!
Tomorrow is another day though and things may go better, fingers crossed they cant go any worse than my luck today.

I regularly twist the ends off breaker bars, then a mate bought me a Halfrauds one, it still breaks but now I take it back and get a replacement one free

The rear hub nuts are from memory 40mm

Halfords ones seem ok value, about £12 for one, but they dont seem very long... like you say at least i can keep returning it!

Found a 35mm socket by the way!

where can you buy 1" drive sockets?

I've had an 1" drive ratchet for over a year now but STILL dont have any sockets for it! I should probably save up and get a set but is it possible to buy one offs?

Its on a half drive so fits the Impact Driver, my ratchet, breaker bar (RIP) etc...

Hi I get all my tools and a 35mm socket from Portland Tools in Lincoln they can get almost anything you ask for at sensible prices.

Changed a driveshaft on my XM today using 36mm socket & 3/4 drive bar, piece of p**s.
