Drive-in Saturday

Post by DLM »

Arrived to help fix a local's 19TGD to find a very, very nice and tidy white 1992 TZD turbo estate outside, up on stands, having brake cables and rack gaiter replaced - what it had failed a pre-MOT on. No ABS, but had grey diagonal-striped trim rather than the usual "Z" black and grey trim. After complimenting the owner on such a nice car (it had beautifully supple rear spheres and arms), I made Steve the owner aware of bxclub site, and then moved on to small octopus on 19TGD.

After removing driveshaft eventually gained access to front h/c return-hose screwclip by unbolting vibration mounts ,then unscrewing top engine mount bolts a little, and finally jacking up under the sump.

Can anyone tell me the best way of removing the r/h driveshaft intermediate bearing? Does it ideally need to stay attached to the driveshaft, while the offset-oval-head bolts are rotated 90 degrees to free it? I'd already removed the inner boot before considering this question, abd my attempts at removal were unsuccessful.

The previous day, my green BX, a white 16RS and a parked green 19TGD all converged within the same 50-odd yards of roadspace. Interesting coincidence. The 4th BX of the day was the 20-year old £150 Mk1 16TRS auto that Andy Lamb is selling - I'd swear that I popped a mention of it under the "for sale" section.

Yup, this sounds like what I experienced - the 11mm special bolts were freed, as were the carrier bolts, and I tried several sharp blows from various angles, but the intermediate bearing did NOT want to shift.

Get under the car and have a proper good look at those t head bolts, i've seen them get in the way a couple of times and no matter how much you smack the shaft it wont budge! secondly make sure the wheel end of the shaft isnt dropping into/onto something and getting jammed, seen that happen too!

Actually I've just realised on looking at Jon's question again, that I was going at the job in what may be a slightly eccentric manner. I had actually, snipped the tie and removed the inner boot joint, rather than trying to pull the whole caboodle. Live and learn.....

This was probably because I'd only previously seen the driveshaft removed in order to replace a gaiter, and did the same here.
