whats the best way to get the 36mm nut off the driveshaft?

My breaker bar wont shift it.

I have used extra length in the past

Try and use a scaffold pole, or someting to make it longer.

I have heard of the brute force method of driving with the bar handle resting on the ground - Would I be brave enough to try it with a smart 4 X 4?

If you have a spare nut you could drill the one on the car then chop it with a sharp chisel, its a method Ihave used to get them off in the breakers yard.

The problem with the bar is that it seems to be flexing too much.

You just cant get the force required on it.

What do proper garages use? Not a cold chisel surely?

I dont have a spare nut and the job needs to be done this weekend.

I use a breaker bar and a 6 foot length of scaffold bar, never fails this method has moved some right stuburn buggers

The key I find is to use big heavy sockets and bars. I have both a 1/2" drive and a 3/4" drive socket and powerbar for hubnuts. Often the nut laughs at the 1/2" drive, but the 3/4" drive shifts it with no problem at all.

Even my van, with it's 41mm hum nuts are easy-peasy with a 3/4" drive.

I think David might have hit the nail on the head with this.

I need 3/4 inch drive sockets and a huge breaker bar. My breaker bar obviously isnt man enough to do the job.

God knows where i'm going to get that sort of bar from this weekend. I can see it costing quite a bit too.

Thanks Ken, i'd probably take you up on that offer if my daily driver wasnt a Xantia V6

I'll have to find a tool supplier around my way and see what they've got. Machine mart doesnt seem to do anything.

I bought a 3/4 drive socket set from an autojumble for about £30, OK it's cheap tak but it's never failed to shift BX.XM and Xantia hub nuts.

I would have thought you could pick up a long knuckle bar for just a few quid at a motorist discount shop. (buy one with a gaurantee)

Alternatively, you could buy a BX diesel auto and borrow mine at the same time

Ken, is this the ebay BX auto?

Kitch, i just thought the nut was a bit dodgy!
