Gearbox oil

Post by Ian_Fearn »

I'm assuming once my driveshaft is out i'm going to loose some fluid.

What should i fill it back up with and where is the filler?

Depends on whether you are doing the offside or the nearside CV boot, you are okay on the offside and should not lose any oil, the nearside shaft can often fall out enough to lose some oil, the filler/level plug should be on the end cover of the gearbox, visible from under the nearside wheelarch with the wheel off, its the largest one on the end plate 19mm socket needed, its at the top, check your manual for other 4x4 differences though, I think you need total BV sae 80 like the rest of us
but I am unsure of the quantity.

I've done it now and it was the offside so i lost no oil.

My gearbox is basically the same as a 2wd one and shares its oil with the diff.

The transfer box has its own oil which is a special oil called 'Totalx4'. I suspect you could use any 4x4 style oil in it though.
