Weak points checklist

Post by Philip Chidlow »

Al - the guy who's selling the GTi Auto to me has VERY kindly offered to take a look underneath the car on his ramps. Any suggested, straightforward inspections that we can suggest?

His PM read: I will take the car to my workshop Wednesday evening and have a good old poke around underneath whilst up on the ramps and let you know what I find.
Any places in particular they go grotty?
Forewarned is fore armed and I would rather you knew as much about the car as possible.

Any advice? Phil

Phil, pull out that list i sent you. That should pretty much cover what to look for mechanically.

Bodily underneath, look round the boot floor, front subframe and sills. Also round the inner rear wings where the fuel tank straps are.

This is a pretty comprehensive guide, if you haven't seen it before.

Best of luck with your new purchase!

Well, as mentioned on the Forum elsewhere - I'm sadly not going to get this BX (even though it was a serious probability). Not that happy about it, but there you go - other commitments and so on!

But thanks for the suggestions. :)

What causes the inner wings to rust in those specific places? My MK1s are perfect! Yet the 16vs have been patched up as usual

I`d imagine that water/muck being thrown up from the front wheels and lodging inside the inner arches causes some of it.
On Cavalier Mk3`s (completely different car I know but bear with me) they have plastic splash guards (similar to BX`s) on the inner wings and the water/muck thrown up from the roads gets in behind these and they start to rot where you can`t see it. Until it`s too late that is.....

The clue on the rotton wheel arch job is a damp boot floor which is incorrectly assumed to be the rear light seals.
