Clonk from rear suspension

Hello

I am actually contacting you on behalf of my dad, he has a BX 19 TZD Saloon which has started making a clonk noise from the rear.

The arm bearings were my first thought but we have had the car on the ramp at my work and the wheels are sitting ok, not obvious unusual leanings.

The noise isn't there all the time, it occurs if you jump up and down on the towbar like a maniac or drive over a speed bump or road with tree roots raising the surface, it doesn't seem to occur if you put the wheels into a pot hole etc.

This noise is a load crack, almost as though on a conventional car two ends of a broken coil spring had locked together and twisted apart again but as we know a BX is better than the norm.

We tried all manner of levering bits and trying to guess but I said I would try the internet because thats what I used to do when I had XM's and BX's in the past.

Ive had this jack the car up at the rear put on axle stands then set the hight lever to low now inspect both rear suspension units you will probably find one that is loose as the wire retaining clip thing either rot away or rot and become useless and as you go over a bump etc the suspension unit moves forward a little in the rear subframe then goes clonk as it re`seats.

Check the bolts attaching the ends of the anti roll bar to the rear arm, from memory they are 13mm bi-hexagons, a litte looseness would give the symptoms you describe.

Have you completely eliminated the exhaust and its supports ? The rearmost support hook under the boot is a known problem --- it sometimes comes loose and has to be welded back on.

If it's none of these things, have you considered that it might be the BX poltergeist getting the hump when you go over a bump ?

I've just changed an arm bearing which was absolutely shot but the wheels showed little or no signs of leaning in.

Thanks for all the replies, I forgot to mention that the exhaust was fine that happened to me before with my first BX.
The bolts at the end of the of the anti roll bar are fine as well I checked this.
I will check that clip on the rear suspension unit.

Sounds like arm bearings to me I had a 19TZD with the same fault, didnt look like much lean but it was knackered!

Only became aparent after we changed the spheres as the old ones were rock solid and didnt allow enough movement.

Yep, I get those clonking/cracking noises too...my rear arm on passenger side has had it

I think it could be the arm bearing after all, does anyone do reconditioned arms to save time ?
I think failing that we will pay someone to have the grief of changing it.

is that clonk you mention all the time or a bit intermittant, ours is intermittant.

Hi adds .....if you look at my thread "squeak squeak" .....I've booked my BXTZD into my local Cit specialists today for new R/H arm bearings,he's doing it on Thursday.
re .......reconditioned ones .....the guy there actually has a right hand arm that he's gonna recondition for me and replace mine with ....at the cost of £100 ......
btw ......it seems the arms are'nt interchangable between the ABS equipped and non ABS equiped versions,I must've been lucky 'cos he'd got an ABS one in stock.
Dunno if anyone in your area does them 'cos you dont say where you are,maybe if you fill in your profile some-one local to you may be able to advise you more.

just adding my experience to this with my previous 19RD est; it had none of the leaning or anything else but at certain times it let out a noise like a rifle shot and it was the rear arm bearings.....went down the second hand route when we fixed 'em....easy peasy!

It only takes an extra hour (first time) when changing the arms to replace the bearing.

The bearing kit costs £25 from GSF and i found the job quite straight forward.

If you want to go ahead you're more than welcome to my phone number incase you get stuck with anything.

I must say though that a vice is pretty much essential kit. The only other tools i used than spanners and sockets was a drift from a machine mart drift kit and the ground down main bolt.

Mine is making the same noise - I reckon it is the bearings as the rear suspension is getting stiffer. No leaning yet though, but bearings on order from GSF.
