meteor 1.9d auto

Post by citroen7 »

just been to look at this beastie and have to say it is not bad its in grey with black and white check interior which is immaculate,it is 1991 with 118,000 on the clock taxed until 01/07 and mot till 04/07 . It did not start first time but i reckon that it is the glow plugs suspension went up ok and down and up again with just a little creaking from the front struts , the only other problem under the bonnet was the the alternator belt was a bit loose it has 5 good tyres and dual electric tow bar and full service history.
The down side , winscreen is cracked but usable and one or two scuffs and small dents but thats it.
so the lady selling wants £150 all in and does not want to budge but i have been the only viewer. The question is do i pay up or let here sweat?
oh and she would not let me test drive because it is not insured but did mention somthing about the gearbox hunting at 50mph answers on a postcard please!!

Mmm, trickey. I think I`d pass on that one, no test drive sounds a bit suspicious and you may find more problems if you did drive it.
Something will turn up eventually, let her sweat it out a bit and if she doesn`t get back to you I wouldn`t be too worried.

The auto box could just be down to incorrect fluid level. Sounds like a few quids worth of repairs already and despite what others on here like, I still can't see the good side of an automatic diesel

The creaking from the front struts is generally an easy fix by lubing them up. Even if it doesn't work, aslong as it isn't doing it at normal ride height then you won't get any major issues. My old estate was doing it two years ago and still is.

But with a decent test drive, it might be a good 'un. No one will be in a rush for it because its the N/A auto, unless someone is specifically looking for one.

70mpg? I'll believe it when I see it!

The best I managed out of a 205 n/a diesel was 54mpg on a slow run. And the BX n/a estate got 53mpg once on a 56mph run up a dual carriageway. Boring though!

70mpg would be great ! that would mean a gallon will last me a week!!
im not worried about the creaking struts as i have only ever had 2 that didnt ,i have only ever had 2 autos one being a mk1 granada and the other a cherokee jeep so it does not bother me as long as there is no serious problems with the gear box . To be honest it is just a stop gap while i sought out the estate ,in fact with that much t&t it would give me all winter to build one good estate out of the two food for thought i think.....

TBH it suprised me too. But doing a long run and keeping the car in top it really does do almost 70mpg (that is with a bit of Sainsbury's finest chucked in) Knocking about town though is a totally different matter. :(

I tell you what.

I'll fill it up on Saturday night here, and you can fill it up on Sunday at Stratford and then you'll see how much it does to the gallon. :D

To get back on topic though,

I'm not sure what she means about the autobox "hunting" at 50mph, and while it's not a lot to pay for a car with T&T if the box turned out to be US, it's £150 down the drain. Although I'd suspect any problem "hunting" is more likely to be with the fuel supply/fuel pump.

ken i can only assume that what she means is that it is not changing up to top gear smoothly or perhaps it cant make up its mind wether to be in top gear or not however i dont think that she is trying to pull a fast one she wants it to go to a good home and really i dont think she would be selling it but for the fact that her dad looked after it for her but he lives in dublin and she now lives in belfast
Me thinks i will ring her tomorrow and insist on a test drive and provided that it goes ok i will make her an offer and if she says no i will walk away and let her come back to me ,personally i think £120 is max but i have to also consider bxs on this side of the water are few and far between..

Tim, who`s Keith?

Citroen7, appreciate what you`re saying but the ferry is only a short hop away. Then again you may have to alight in Liverpool or Birkenhead so perhaps you`ll be best finding a BX `over there` :?: :D

I think it's odd that the problems at 50mph because if this is true, you likely do have a problem as my auto changes into top at 42mph on normal driving and drops out of top at 38mph. Dunno if the diesel is different? :?

further update from "over here " meteor now safely on the drive rear suspension a little on the harsh side but it pulls like a train and auto box changes up ok but a little notchy on the way down, the 50mph thingy seems to be when you boot it it changes down and then up again .so a gearbox oil change and general clean plus new glow plugs and i will be happy any further tps for auto box tinkering welcome.
