Although the words Granny, Eggs and Suck may come to mind, I’ll make no further apologies before sharing my way of dealing with scratches and paint imperfections which are too marked to be successfully treated by rubbing and flatting compounds of the G3 and T-cut ilk.
Tear an irregular, jagged-edge hole in a sheet of newspaper big enough to surround the damage, with an inch or so margin. Tape the masking paper in place and spray undercoat, topcoat(s) and lacquer coats as usual , When the last application has flashed, remove the paper and wait around two weeks for the paint to harden, Then compound as usual. I’ve found that trying to touch in scratches with a fine brush or similar never really works, and , even during the two week wait the repair is almost invisible particularly with a jagged-edge paint patch.
BTW
A really excellent fine and final cutting compound can be made up from a paste of cornflower - this tip comes with due acknowledgement to to the respected and much-missed AlanS

At the risk of "hi jacking" Gareth's thread ........the way I've dealt with metallics is as Gareth describes ...and then tear a slightly larger hole in another sheet of newspaper and apply clear laquer over the touch up,and then rub down after a week or so.
I did a reasonable repair on a mates BMW [he's a good mate and not yer typical Beemer driver .....honest! ] .....where the laquer had started to lift.
