Speedo query

Post by MULLEY »

Does anyone know if i can fit a n/a diesel speedo to a turbo model? Will it read correctly, i have been informed that a Gti one wont work.

The problem that i have is that the trip is bust on the current speedo that i have, so got the mechanic to have a look & he said the gears were mashed & infact they were catching on the other gears hence the speedo was wobbling.

I dont need a new binnacle as all the rest of the guages work fine, i just need the speedo.

Hoping someone can shed some more light on this!!

Cheers

The wobbling will be the speedo cable as much as anything ele mate, all bxs do it eventually, get him to change the cables £20 for tha pair from GSF at the same time.

A n/a speedo head will work, it's just a question of wether it'll read accurately or not. I may have some hear but couldn't say for sure what they're off.

Anyway, why won't the Gti one work :? it's cable driven same as the rest.
They think it's all over, it is now!

Any bx speedo will work in any bx but they were matched to the gearing in the diff. Hence a GTi clock will read VERY low on a TD and a N/A clock will be 10mph low, you can overcome this of course by changing the profile of the tyre to suit the speedo but the easiest approach is to get the right speedo head for the car. TD speedo's are available new but they are £250!

As an example, my TD was a N/a car, I fitted speedline alloys with lower profile tyres (195/60's) and the speedo was reading high (indicated 60 when I was only doing 50), fitted the td engine / box and kept the N/A speedo head, speedo now accurate! (I know this cos I had it checked by the guys that do the Tacho's on our buses in work!)

GTi / 16v clocks are not available at all unless you want one to read in Kms / hour.

gearing

Post by Toddman »

Does the speedo drive in the gearbox not have a cog with differing numbers of teeth to alter the speedo reading to suit each differential?

I am too lazy to check the manual :D

I don't think so :? I once tried changing the speedo drive cog in a car that was way off, but it didn't seem to make any difference.

Er, not quite mate..... There are differences in the drive gear in the box but that was purley design alterations over the years, the gearing was always done in the speedo head to compensate for different diffs etc. To make matters more complicated the 16v has 3 different speedo heads despite the gearing being the same that are not interchangable due to the drive piece being different.....

If you have access to a N/A speedo and cant find a TD clock then the easiest solution is to fit the N/A clock and wham 60 profile tyres on the car. Hey presto, accurate speedo again!

Is there anyway you can determine what car the binnacle has come from?? There is one on e-bay, its clearly a diesel but the seller doesnt know if its a n/a or td.

Theres a number on the top right hand corner of the speedo head that identifies it. Cant remember off the top of my head what the number is for a TD though.

That said, I'm afraid I'd forgotten all about the speedo mate. I have a fully functioning TD head in stock!

It's your's for the postage if you want it. The mileage recorder drum is easy to change so you can swap them over and keep the genuine miles on the car!

what luke said i have heard through a group of pug enthusiasts!
they said that there were a couple of sets of gears that go in the speedo housing on the mi box that alter the speedo reading! (i remember them saying that one was white! and the others obviously wernt!) having never looked i couldnt say but from what they said there are different gears for the box end too!
