Steel wheels question!

Post by cavmad »

Can someone please enlighten me on steel wheel widths for the BX? Standrad seem to be about 4.5 or 5J but do the GTi`s and TZD`s have a wider wheel (i.e 5.5J)?
I ask because the current steels on my GTi have standard tyre fitments (something like 165-70-14`s) and I want to put wider tyres on, ideally 185-60-14`s.

Not sure Cav, but Arts GTi (which is mint and still has new car smell) has 185s fitted. The size will be stamped on the rim somewhere. Not very helpful but there you go!

No problem, thanks Mr Bandit. I reckon my standard wheels are 5J (max) due to current tyre size and their appearance.
I`m now wondering if Xantia steels will fit? Potential problems there though include whether they have the little locating hole as BX wheels do and also whether the GTi BX wheel trims will fit on?

Hi Billy

I had Xantia 14's on my Gti as it also had 165's on 5 inch rims when i bought it. They are 5.5 inch rims as is correct for a GTi and will fit any BX. Don't think any other BX had 5.5's on them. All TZD turbo's I've seen had 5's as standard not the wider GTi rims.

Looks like standard BX 19 size was 5B (yes I do mean B), 8 valve GTi were 5 1/2 J and 16 Valve 6J (alloys)

Aren't Xantias all 15 inch?

Some ZX are 14's (rest are 13's) and if they are 14's they seem to be 5 1/2 in J's.

Certainlky ZX 14's have holes in the wheel disc as I think do the GTi wheels. Your BX wheels may have a locating hole for the stud on the back brakes. ZX wheels (and possibly GTi ones) don't have this hole. The stud unscrews and can be replaced by a countersunk screw, or alternatively I suppose you could drill a bole in the wheel if you could ever get it in the right place! (I know I'd have trouble!)

Thanks folks, once again some quick and helpful answers. Jeremy, early Xant`s (or at least some of them) did have 14" wheels, the ones I encountered were all shod with 185-65-14 tyres (mostly `T` rated) but that is no problem as 185-60-14`s will fit on no problem.
Cheers again chaps,

Early Xantias had 14 inch rims, some of which would be 5.5j if you were lucky, I think some 405s had 5.5s too.

Cavmad, i've had a look at the ones on the Gti, no markings whatsover & the other spares in my garage, there are some markings which are so unclear i couldnt read them, so ive go no idea if they are 5, or 5.5j's?

I would have thought that you could fit a 185/60 onto a 5j?

Cheers for the info Jeremy, it still means that i have no idea on what the rim sizes are for the selection of wheels that i have, can i use a tape measure to find the size? Does 5.5 mean 5.5 inches?

Strange but true - the wheel width is measured in inches as is the diameter for conventional (non-runflat tyres). I think its simply the measurement between the 2 rims - best to measure and see if you are getting the enswers you expect. I'd expect the rims with solid centre discs to be narrower than those with the holes in the disc.

Steels on my GTi are definitely known standard and 185-60-R14

I think its simply the measurement between the 2 rims
I concur with Jeremy: I've just measured the 6J Alloys off my Xantia. With tyres off, the inner dimension between the inner and outer rim (effectively the width of the 'gap' that the tyre fits in) is 6 inches. Maybe you could PM Art as his car is as new so he should be able to see quite clearly the stamp on the rim (I think you just have to remove the wheel trim and hey presto!!)
