LHM Query

Post by MULLEY »

This may seem very daft, but i bought some Carlube LHM+ mineral based fluid & was going to top up the car (leaky pump) but it wasnt green in colour, so i thought perhaps i have the wrong stuff?? Is it just citroen Total lhm which is green & everyone else is just normal oily colour? & is it ok to mix them?

Told you it was daft....

The C5 used LDM I think. Something like that!

Most LHM's I see are bright green. Except this halfords one the other day which was a weak darker green. Guess it depends who's bottle they've relabelled

I bought 4 litres of Morris LHM+ for £3 a bottle from GSF today to replace the hydraurincage which has been in there for a couple of months. I hope it's ok. Has anyone tried this ? It seems a pretty good price. I haven't opened it yet, but if it's not green it's not going in.

What colour was it????
Normally, LHM/LHM+ is green, Milspec 556 is beige, (aviation hydraulic fluid), Renard is blue (made in Holland and rumoured to be Milspec with additives), Dexron ATF is red and the stuff in C5s I understand is orange.
Seems strange that it would be a different colour as the colour of most things made under licence is set down as part of the conditions of the licence agreement.

I think you'll find that LHM and LHM + are blended to a formulation laid down by Citroen. It could be that the formulation stipulates the colour - certainly it is generally accepted that the stuff is green, its successor and predecessor are different colours.

How much has the LHM cost you? How much will it cost to repair your car if the stuff damages it? Do you like a gamble?

It looks like normal oil colour, sort of translucent? i paid about 16 quid for 4.5 litres & was assured that it was suitable, but i would rather not take the risk, i think i will take it back & get an explanation.

On the instructions it does state the following:

Use only where lhm, lhm+, Citroen B71 2710 or ISO 7308 is recommended by the vehicle manufacturer.

Carlube LHM+ is a mineral based hydraulic fluid that can be used in certain citroen applications - Brake, self-levelling & power steering systems.

It even states that its also suitable for certain Rolls-Royce & Bentley's.

So it would appear to be ok?? Its just the colour that worries me....

It may be perfectly alright - Citroen themselves say that even engine oil can be used in an emergency - but you are only going to find out one way.

I've never heard of Carlube - but many people have never heard of Morris Oils - and I've been using them for 15 or 20 years - and they must be OK as they or their directors have a Sentinel stem lorry as a toy.

The mystery is over, it is green & is the correct stuff, poured some into the cap (Ken's suggestion), & its green. DOH!!! it looks totally different in the can.... So there you have it, 4.5 litres of Carlube LHM+ suitable for Citroen's for about £16.....
