Hmmm, messy

Manouvering the 16v out the way to get the Rover onto the driveway, parked it up and noticed a funny noise. It was like a steam train letting off steam, just very quietly. Then I noticed what looked like smoke coming from under the car!

Got round the other side to find that it wasn't smoke, it was vapourised LHM.....I've burst a HP pipe

Car sank to the floor in minutes and covered the road in LHM. Had to drive it back up onto the driveway on low.....lots of grounding out and now I have a knackered exhaust too.

Balls!

Is there a common pipe near the back wheel that goes? I've not had a look under it yet.

Near side I pressume

Bad news if it is, all the front to rear pipes pass by this side. If ones gone, they'll all need doing.

I'm glad someone noticed, I was wondering if it was just me

To be fair though, alot of the 16v is original. Its a 17year old car.....pipes are going to corrode and split. At least it should be something I can sort.

Its the latest Nissan and Rover sagas that are getting me down. The Rovers now on ebay....I'm washing my hands of it.

hi there,
you´ll prolly find its the one near the height corrector thats goes round the axel i think. i have changed this on mine last year. and previous owner my mate told me it had been changed twice by him in the 6 years he had it.

I agree kitch, I look at it this way, the more bits your replace there less there is to go wrong! Eventually I will have a BX with no faults!

Found the leak....its up beside the saddle petrol tank. Can't see which pipe it actually is, but they're all about as old as each other

Question is, which to buy? Or go for all of them?

Better to replace all four, genuine citroen ones are pre bent which helps identify them a lot, not too dear either £70 last time I did some, if you have access to a ramp or pit, drop the exhaust off its rubbers it des not take too long, there are several smaller ones around the rear end, these are around a fiver, careful or you will need some of these too.

On the plus side though, that's particularly healthy looking LHM you have in your car! Shame most of it is all over the driveway now.

If one pipe has failed, than I'd put money on adjacent ones being wafer-thin, and the moment you disturb them to change one, you'll fracture another. I'd change them all, as an assembly if you can.

I guess it makes sense to change them all. You don't change one brake disc do you?

Am I right in thinking these are the only front to rear pipes on the car? If I go into a stealer and ask for the front to rear pipes (all 4) they'll know what I'm on about?

Does your car have ABS in which case some of them are of a larger size. Not standard.

In that case, I think it's just one pipe probably the brake feed which is the thicker size.

I know Sleepy had three pipes for sale, I might have the thicker one.

Whats your arm bearings like? Reason being it's easier to fit the new pipes with the N/S arm removed.

It's not the most pleasant of jobs on the car and can be costly if the rear caliper bleed screws don't undo, likewise sometimes the rear cylinder/pipe unions.
It pays to have alternative spares available before you start.
