Concertina hose

Post by Neil »

Dear all,

I had some welding done on my Dec 88 16 RE at the weekend and, as normal, the concertina hose from that is an air intake for the engine was flattened. The thing is now held together with insulating tape and I think I need to get a new one. Does anyone have any suggestions of a souce?

Thank you

Hello Neil

Welcome to the club. You'll find that a concertina hose held together with insulating or duct tape is our secret society badge of recognition, so don't go rushing to get a new one.

Joking aside, your local scrappy is the best bet, with the proviso that petrol BXs are pretty rare these days so scrapped parts are hard to come by.

Come to think of it, I may have a couple of phone numbers at home - i'll look and get back to you.

Neil,

It sounds like you've had an absolute rum deal with that garage

If you can't find a genuine concertina hose, then you could use the bodge solution I came up with. Buy two lengths of foil ducting hose from Halfords. They do it in different diameters - I think you need either 45 or 50mm, but measure the diameter of the stub on the exhaust manifold (or the other end on the carb heating/ambient flap box) to be sure. Un-concertina them, then carefully join them end-to-end using some trusty duck tape. Connect the assembled long tube, bending and twisting to the required fit, put a jubilee clip on either end and hey presto!

Only thing is..... I don't know if the originals were cardboard for a reason, and whether foil is a bad substitute for whatever reason (like it gets very hot!!) but mine's held together now since last winter. If you find a source of genuine ones let me know!

Regards,

Mark.

Good idea

That's a great idea, Mark! Shame I didn't think of it myself when I was in Halford's the other day.

Your GSA is as rare as hen's teeth over here now.

Why don't you put a photo of the GSA Estate on the site? I'm sure lots of people have never actually seen one!

GSA Estate

That's really beautiful condition. I've only ever seen one other Estate, and that was French registered.
