vibration?

i wounder if any can help my bx seems to vibrate like some has got of my steering wheel and is shaking it from side to side at about 70mph onwards and it gets worse the faster i go, now it's even worse now that i have 17" alloys.

i've noticed since i have had the car the trackingis out it steers slightly to the left could it be this? it knocks alot from the front when i go over bumps, bushes maybe? i don't think it's the wheels as the car does it with both sets (16v speedlines).

i'm seeking advice before i spend money on the wrong cure.

Why not take it to a local garage & get them to locate the problem, give u a quote to fix, & then i u can do it yourself if the quote is a bit high.

When i was driving my Gti there was an awful clanking noise when accelerating & the car would dive to the right (i think or was it left? i forget), it need a new f/r arm, cost £70 inc fitting which i didnt think was too bad.

Could be any number of things really.

I'd check the ball joints, the drop links and the wishbone bushes for the knock. Maybe check the TRE's, get the tracking set, it's cheap enough at most tyre establishments, and just to be on the safe side, maybe get the wheels balanced if you can't find any problems elsewhere..

What's the tyre size and is the offset any different from standard?

My old BX used to vibrate heavily at 70mph plus. My Cit specialist garage told me it was one of my rear tyres delaminating. He spun the wheel while it was up on the garage jack and showed me how you could see the circumferential (is that a word?) tread grooves moving from side to side, like a warped LP.

This would affect balancing - so make sure all the tyres are true before suspecting anything else.

Are the rims straight and true - have a look at the inside edge - spin the wheel and have a good look - as some of the ultra wide rims available aren't very strong and particularly with low profile tyres can bend as a result of hitting potholes and obstructions.

One way to test the theories is both easy and free: assuming your spare wheel is ok and balanced up swap it with each of the wheels on the car in turn and take it out for a test drive everytime. Stating the bleeding bovious I know but if you replace one wheel and the problem stops then you`ve just found out what it was.

The droplinks have clearly failed (clonking over bumps) and the vibration, (a different problem) is not one of wheel balance. It is most likely to be a failing driveshaft, made worse by putting heavier and more gyroscopic wheels on the car than it was designed for.

thanks for your advice i will do the relivent checks it's more than likely a combination of things drop links, driveshafts as my bx makes that sort of wobble like a knacked driveshaft.

As for the wheels yes they are 17" but put next to the originals theres no size difference it's called keeping within the rolling radius if you stay within 10% of the rolling radius there shouldn't be any issues and the offset is peugeot offset so i can't see that being a problem.
