The government department which values imports for VRT purposes is a room with a few guys smoking fags and going through the latest Auto Trader.
Low value stuff like the '90 BX in the example there has a €315 standard registration fee, but prices can and do vary quite a bit on newer cars. Have a play around with different models on their website. The valuation figures are a joke anyway - you show me someone in Ireland who's selling a working BX GTi for €634 and I'll go and buy it off him right now.
The online quote system is programmed in such a way that the VRT rate will go up on a car which was previously under the radar if it starts getting a lot of hits.
