Air filters

Post by MULLEY »

I'm thinking of buying one of those K&N replacement air filters for the TZD (not an induction kit). The idea being that it would be more environmentally friendly rather than having to replace the air filter every year.

Does anyone use one or similar & what does anyone think?

To be honest I doubt it will do much for your TZD, and as they cost about 10 times what a paper filer costs you will need to keep it a LONG time!

They don't do much at all mate. Very overrated in my experience.

Stewart, my neighbour got it for me from Poundstretcher i think. Didnt cost much, it was £7.99, bargain....

Its like a large gun type device that fits on the end of a hozelock & it can spray normal water, a section where u add the shampoo then squirts that out as well & then finally there is an ioniser cartridge in the unitl. Thats the magic bit which makes it dry without smears & looks like its been polished when it hasnt.

You can buy the ioniser cartridges & shampoo seperately for it, just got to find some now before i run out.....

Forgot to reply to the other replies on this thread, i wasnt bothered about any performance gains, i just dont want to keep replacing filters when one will last the life of the car & when that dies, i can then put it into my next one.

I put a new (normal paper) filter into the Gti, what a hassle, i noticed that the airbox had a clip undone on the bottom half section right next to the ABS unit, tried getting at it & the clip fell off. So unbolted the abs unit, still not enough clearance so had to take the sphere off as well. Finally got the clip on ok.

When i pulled the old filter out, it was quite mucky, i even had to hoover out the airbox, full of crap, not sure how dirty a filter gets in a year, but this one looked a lot older, i dont think when it was serviced last that they replaced the filter. Anyway its now sorted, but what should have been a couple of minutes must have taken me about 1.5hrs in total.

Thats even more reason to get one of these K&N one's just so i dont have to bother doing it again.

At least by regularly replacing an air filter on a GTi you get to see how well the corrosion is progressing along the inner wing  :!:

At least i now know what to do, it would only have taken a couple of mins, but i had clean out the filter housing & that stupid catch in the corner was the culprit.....

Rust :?:, dont know what u mean :D
