Slow mk1 flasher syndrome

Post by Kitch »

On the 16RS I just got, it has an issue with the indicators that I've had before on other mk1's. They do work, but theres a really long pause in between ticks. Is it just a case of replacing the relay for a new one, or is there something more sinister going on?

My Mk 1 used to suffer from all manner of electrial strangeness, much of it stopped when I added an additional earth from the engine to the body and re-made the thin earth connection that goes onto the inner wing behind the battery.

That seems to be a common trait of they type of flasher unit used in early PSA cars. The sound the flasher makes in the Digit is identical to the '84 CX, and all the late-70's and early-80's Horizons I owned years ago. And they're all really slow.

Personally, I think it adds to the character of the car. I think the slowest flash rate permissted is something like 45/min, although I'm not entirely sure about that.

I know its not a Cit, but my SD1 had the same problem so much so that it was pulled up on its MOT for it, I changed the flasher unit for the a more modern one now and its flashes twice as fast.

The SD1 would surely have had a bi-metalic strip flasher unit? The age and go to cock, my ambulance had one, it was naff.

The BX I would guess the Mk1 would have a solid state unit? I'd try fitting a shiny new flasher unit and see if it speeds things up. If not, it's easy to make a flasher unit to flash however fast (or slow) you want, it's so easy even I can do it!
Smokes lots, because enough's enough already!

Far too many BX's, a bus, an ambulance a few trucks, not enough time and never enough cash...

Slow flashers are often a symptom that all is not well with the charging circuit. Its worth putting a meter across the battery with the engine running - you should see something between 14 and 14.4 volts - if its around 11 or 12 the chances are that only 2 phases out of 3 on the alternator are working.

Sort it and you'll find everything else seems rejuvenated - wipers, lights etc.
