Washer pump

Post by MULLEY »

Mine appears to have stopped working, can it be repaired or once they go are they stuffed?

& does anyone have a spare one they would like to part with?

Washer motors are very prone to terminal corrosion - a really good clean may help (and from experience - I mean a really good clean)

Its possible the thing has filled with crud and may respond to careful diamantling and cleaning. I've not needed to do a BX one so don't know how it works.

Halfords have an impressive range of the things - you may be able to match yours - or put one close to the tank (mount on rubber on the engine side not dashboard side to keep the noise down) and drill a hole in the lid or the top of the tank for the feed. Leave the old one in as a bung and leave a pipe on it coming level with the top of the tank and tied there to prevent leakage.

Check the connections mate on the side of the washer bottle, also it could be the wiper stalk itself (it was on mine)

You didnt say it was the rear one mate

Its for the rear washer, so its not the stalk. I had a look in Halfords & they seem to cost about £15, which is waaaaay tooo much. So will have a go at taking it apart & clean the contacts to see if resurects it or not.

Cheers

If it's FUBAR, send me a PM, and when I can get to the farm without a boat (I kid you not...) I'll post one to you gratis.
Smokes lots, because enough's enough already!

Far too many BX's, a bus, an ambulance a few trucks, not enough time and never enough cash...

Well, we're ok in Bristol, so I'm here for a while!
Up at the farm is a different matter!
The farm itself is ok, it's actually on the highest bit of land in the area, but everything around it is, well, wet!

The local pub is still shut as the cellar is suitable only for frogmen, and it's quiet bizzare seeing boats trundling along what was the only road into the village.
It's possible to get buses and tractors through (just) but theres so many cars that have been washed into the ditches either side of the road it's dodgy as hell trying to pass them since you can only see the roofs.
and where there are no cars you cant see the where the road ends and the ditches begin, and they are BIG ditches, so for now at least it's a bit of a no go area.
Hows things with you now Dean? Dried out a little??

We're going round in circles here.... It's the rear wiper ;) .

Check the switch on the dashboard. It has to make two circuits- rear wiper motor and it's washer motor at the front. Also sometimes the contacts to the motor are loose. Happened to me with the front: even after I cleaned it up, it wouldn't work. I made the connnector a tighter fit, et voila. They do tend to get knocked around if you store oil/lhm bottles in the "storage space" next to the washer bottles.

Mark.

Cheers for that Mark, whats the technique for removing the dashboard switch without busting the el cheapo citroen plastics?? I presume once out i just clean the metal connecters up a bit, & that will do the trick?

If that doesnt work i will try the motor connector, tightness idea. I dont store anything in those areas, so they havent been bashed by me....blinkin previous owners :)

erm, before replacing the swithc, plug a meter into the connector to the pump, pull the rear wiper off the window, stick it on volts and with the ignition on, press the button (rear wash wipe button) . I'll put bets on the meter lighting up at 12v! Bend the pins in the connector closer together (snipe nose pliers from the outside of the plastic arround the connector) then clean the pins on the pump, clean them again and Vas' the buggers up!

Took me multiple attempts to get it right (and working) but all the tests i did showed that the pump was fine, the wiring was fine, the switch was fine, total pain in the ass to go round in circles!
