Auto choke problem 85 TRS MK1

Post by B-Hive »

Hello Everyone

This is my first post as a proud new owner of an 85 TRS Auto with 93000km on the clock . Finding myself rapidly obsessed by these wheels

:?: An issue that I am finding tricky though is sorting out the auto choke that seems to rely on an overly enormously strong spring and a thermocapsule that I could not imagine would have the strength or pitch to operate this spring to release the choke. Was thinking of adapting a solenoid to open and close the choke, but I keep coming back to wanting to get the original system sorted. Can anyone give some feedback on this mechanism. The Haynes manual is useless!!! The carb has had an overhaul kit through it in the last couple of years and I'm starting to consider if the choke was not reassembled correctly. Do these thermo capsules fail? do they operate this heavy spring (that would be just as at home on a trucks suspension?)

Lets keep the BX from extinction..Already a classic in my view...the D's C's and G's all went through this period

The capsule relies on the wellknown waxstat principle. The wax widens its volume when heated, and you bet it can push that spring !
Its the same forces you see when water forms into ice. Nothing can withstand that

However the mechanism must be adjsuted from time to time due to normal wear & tear.
It works really well once its adjusted correctly - and any ignition or false air issues are truly sorted before trying to adjust.

The adjustment procedure is found in the carby compendium on Bob Smiths's website :

Hello and welcome! Any chance of some pictures of your rare car?

Take a look at these past threads about auto-chokes. I know mostly these concern the Solex carb, but the Weber has a similar system.
