Mine is due next week. But just a general question, what do you check befor you take yours in? In general i just make sure the tyres have tread and are to pressure, lights, horm wipers front and rear, seat belts, oil and coolant, lhm, and i rip on to the car park at work and slam on to test the brakes  is there anything i might be able to look at over the week end. By the way it will be getting a service before hand. So with fresh filters the emisions should be ok.

You don't say whether its a diesel or not gaz. If it is, its well worth giving it a bit of a ragging on the way to test centre (Italian tune up) and clear all that crap thats been building up in the exhaust boxes over the last year of careful driving. Saves it all being blown out when they do the smoke test.
With regard to the brakes ....if you are in the habit of driving solo most of the time. you could find that the rear brakes are a little seized as they are dependant on weight in the rear of the car. I usually put as much crap as I can in the boot for a couple of days to get them all freed up... other than that as you say; I think the other important thing is new filters and oil.
Good Luck.
