new windscreen?

Post by toddao »

I look at the world through 21 years' worth of scratches on my windscreen . A new one has come up on ebay here and before I jump in..

How hard is it to fit a screen at home and get all the laminating right and strong etc Also, removal of the old one, presumably with some sort of cheese wire rig, is that a trial and how many hands needed?

Final question - not technical, unless you're measuring the lessening of pocket pressure -
what is the rough price for a new windscreen and how much professionally fitted? Anyone know? I've got no idea and I don't want to get into false economies!

Last year I was quoted £80 fitted by a mobile repairer here in Hampshire for a replacement screen - his first question was "do you want plain or tinted?". This was someone who specialises in older cars, though.

As for the removal, I'd only try it with a professional tool: the last time I got involved in trying to remove one from a scrapper ended with a loud ping of broken wire and a crack in the corner we were working on.
Back on two wheels and pedal power for the moment.

I had a new genuine Citroen screen fitted last year.

I contemplated doing it myself but in the end i got a local guy to do it for me. He was a real pro who'd quit autowindscreens because he was fed up with having to do things "on the quick".

I'm really pleased he did it though as it fits perfectly and getting the old screen out would have been cr4p for a first timer.

Can be done as DIY. Have done it twice.
But I'd rather let a specialist do it. Its an un-usual work process even for the skilled DIY'er and its easy to spoil the donor screen - which David certainly not is the only one to try :?

Thanks for replies fellas. Seems it's one to leave to the pros - if I can find one in the BX free vicinity!
