exhaust or oil fumes through heater

Post by maxgreenwood »

I think i'm getting exhaust or oil fumes coming through the heating system. It smells on hard acceleration, and a little the rest of the time. Its been like this since i've had the car (about 5000 miles). Heat comes through fine at speed although my heater blower motor is still not working. don't know if that is relevant? - i've got info on how to fix the blower when i can get round to it.

Apparently it does have a small oil leak from somewhere round the top of the engine, but nothing to worry about according to the garage (last time i had a strut return changed).

I saw the thread about fumes in the coolant being signs of HG failure, although the coolant doesn't smell anything other than coolant like.

Is it just being drawn up from the engine somewhere? maybe a leak in exhaust?

If you have a smallish oil leak, you will also have burnt oil fumes in the engine bay. These fumes will surely find their way into the cabin. The smell is very close to exhaust fumes : most un-pleasant

It has nothing to do with a blown HG. Even if it had to vent itself through the coolant cap, you would probably never notice it - in that way at least.

My personal experience with a blown HG is overpressure from the coolant filler cap, expelling the coolant, thus leading to overheating of the engine : the yellow and red warnings comes on.

thanks Anders

what do you reckon of the increased smell on hard acceleration?

could it be a leaky turbo fuel feed or glowplug seal or injector? the reason i say this is cos engine is lumpy on startup until warmed up, and i read here that it could be one of the glowplugs?
