BX RD Loosing Power

Return jouney from deepest Surrey Thursday night,. on M25 car started to loose power, would only manage 30mph, missing badly.

Off at the next junction and picked my way via the backroads to Bedfordshire, must have stalled about 50 times, but I got home.

Thought it would be a partially blocked diesel fuel filter, a new one was fitted the next day, but still not performing as it should, so today I fitted clear pipes either side of the filter housing :-



This indicated bubbles between the filter and the injector pump, so the filter bleed pump was removed and dismantled:-



Filled to the brim with gunge and rust.
Fortuately the diaphragm was intact, so a complete deep clean and reassemble cured the problem!!! Fingers crossed...

Metal flow and return pipes have been removed, cleaned, de rusted painted, refitted and waxoiled, no problems there.

But the filter housing was borrowed from my Visa D when the original Bosch/Perflux unit failed..

Now that's what I call grim.... I can think of a car I need to check that on. How much of a tussle was it removing the metal cap over the diaphragm?

On the Roto Diesel/Lucas one is easy, but on the Bosch/Purflux unit a little more difficult, as one of the lugs on this is hidden and difficult to get to, but is do-able with care.

Sequence that I used:

1. Hold unit in a vice so that you can access all the tabs.
2. Select a suitable straight bladed screw driver.
3. With one hand apply pressure to the top of the metal cap.
4. Lift each tab, just sufficient to allow removal, let them bend outwards.
5. When all tabs are clear, release hand pressure, and the internal spring will push the cap clear.
6. lift out the spring, and spring clip, may be very rusty, even bits missing.
7. Lift out the plastic plate with the rubber popet valves, and the gasket underneath.
8. After cleaning all the conponents, place the unit in a vice again, assemble, apply hand pressure to the cap again, and tap the tabs back horizontally using a small hammer, then finally crimp the bottom of the tabs back using pliers or grips..

ohhh - and the diaphragm is not available as genuine part.
But you may hit your luck visiting a diesel specialist. These guys do stock many odd bits ...

- like synthetic rubber oblates/membranes various diameters
