Does anyone has a spare diesel AX knocking around?
Does anyone has a spare diesel AX knocking around?
I promised Lena that we could think about buying her a little car if she passes her (9th) driving test. I reckon she's terrified of driving the BX and this is why she keeps failing.
Anyway, in the unlikely event of having to make good on my promise, I thought I'd ask whether anyone has a diesel AX that they want to shift. I've looked on ebay and there are a few around.
She takes her test again tomorrow. I'll report back.
Cheers
Oscar

Don't know of anything offhand Oscar but http://www.axoc.co.uk/phpBB2/ a decnet and friendly place and worth a try. Most importantly though good luck to Lena for tomorrow!

I've not got an AX, but I've got a 1996 106 1.5D. It's an early ph2 model, so it looks pretty modern really but is basically an AX in drag, much like a Saxo. It's 3dr, in silver, has only done around 130k and has CD, sunroof and central locking. It's not mint, but runs really well and looks presentable enough. MOT'd until January as it stands, although I'm pretty confident it'll go through another test so might put another year on if any interest.
It's not definately for sale yet, as I may decide to sell my Xsara TD instead however. Apparently this little beauty drove down from Blackburn on £20 (thats 258miles!) which equates to 68mpg average! I'm weighing some sums up, but one of them will have to go shortly, so if you're interested I'll let you know?
If not, as mentioned AXOC is a brilliant way to find an AX...they do love them on there.

AXs are splendid, shame you weren't asking a month earlier - I just sold mine.
The 106 feels like a more complete car, and sturdier, but has much heavier steering and is geared higher - better on the motorway, not so nippy around town.
In either case, get the 1.5 rather than 1.4 diesel if possible, and check for rust behind headlamps on AXs. 106s are more rust-proof. Either one should return over 50mpg and go on to 200,000 miles comfortably. Great cars.

Yay!
She passed! THanks for your good wishes, that obviously did the trick.
I'm now trying to weasel my way out of my promise, as we hardly need one car, let alone two. Anyway, she says that she new it was just a bluff but chose to believe me.
I'll have a look on axoc, thanks for the tip. And thanks for the 106 thoughts as well. I had one of those for a week, it was a lovely little motor, but a tiny pedal box, and I kept hitting the accelerator when I wanted to brake.

Congrats on the test etc. I'm gonna keep the 106 for now, I can't resist the potential economy and djoptix has sold it to me!
So its a Xsara TD SX for sale now, with A/C!

Have no experience of Diesel AXs but first I and now my brother ran my father's 106 diesel after he shuffled off this mortal coil. A nice basic car, though the unpowered steering is incredibly heavy unless front tracking is spot-on. A tutorial in driving such a torque-heavy power-light car is useful for anyone who's never driven old-school diesels before, though with the TUD engine it's more a case of exploiting the torque properly, rather than struggling with old-school diesel sluggishness. Seemed to use virtually no diesel on long runs, and not much more around town.
The pedal layout is OK once you're used to it, and of less consequence for anyone with smaller feet). Best value from older ones (run-out Ph1 special editions can be very good value): the later 106s seem to be more expensive than you'd expect, like all small cars since everybody turned economy-minded earlier on this year. I found this during the summer when buying a small car for my older daughter's 21st.
Was tempted to ge t one for my daughter, but went the Fix-Or-Repair-Daily route as she prefers them and I found a Mk4 Fiesta privately , and also because the 106 seemed poor on crash survivability measures.

Back on two wheels and pedal power for the moment.
