Wider Steels

Does anyone have a set of the wider steel wheels from a GTi 8v? sitting around. I want to fit the wider 185/60 or maybe 195's on the TRS but keep it standard looking.

Did the TZD Turbo's have the wider rims aswell?

Afraid not, TZD Turbos were 165s as well. Very under tyred IMO.

I can find three different rim widths on the parts listings. 5", 5.5" and 6".

6" is listed for the 16V, 5.5" on the GTi 8V (and 1.6 injection, as well as something described as "VIP pack" on the diesels...). 5" on pretty much everything else, although I think some of the earlier basic 14s ran 4.5" rims with narrower tyres. The 6" rims may foul the rear arches for vehicles without the 16V body kit.

5.5" rims are same as Xantia 14" steel rims (one in stock here, BTW!). Using steel "spare" rims is probably not an option, because they have flats welded around the bolt holes, so you need the matching alloy wheel bolts to fit them, and they're not done in 6" anyway. So probably best go for Xantia 5.5" rims, which are ventilated.

Just found that 4.5" rims on quite a few 14s, including later ones...

Just for future reference, my 14 came with 165s on it, and I had no problem fitting the 6J wheels under the arches.

The 16v bodykit is actually just stuck over the standard BX arch and gives no extra clearance.

I know this has been discussed before... but you know.

I think that depends on the year maybe? or possibly it was a factory option to have wider wheels? I know the TZD turbo my sister had was on wider steel wheels with 185's on it, and they were BX wheels as far as I could tell.

I thought that too, I'm sure I remember there being a type of wheel trim for TurboD's thj
at wouldn't fit a standard wheel as the rim was wider?

I'm equally sure I've seen Turbo's with 185 tyres on...

In the BX Booklet with the car for 92 model year it only shows 165/70R 14 MXL 81T for all diesel models & nothing else.

185/60R 14 MXV 82H is shown only for BX GTi, TZi Estate and BX 4x4 GTi

Your quite right, the only BX to come with the wider steels was the GTi 8v, but Xantia rims are the same size so that what I will be geting, Mr Fenwick has some

To take the thread in a slightly random direction, am I alone in thinking that the pre 92ish non vented wheels in original grey look absolutely stunning, far nicer than the later ugly black vented type?

I'll get my coat...

Tim's wheels are always 'coated' in Wheel Trims.

I agree entirely, when my TD was a 19RD and sat on steels we went through a phase of the trims getting nicked, I replaced them all twice (at £50 a corner) and then when they got nicked again I thought "sod this" and never replaced them. The next morning I looked at the car and thought "it looks better without the trims, I really like the grey wheels".
And thats how it stayed until the Speedlines arrived, then I thought "steel wheels are crap" and never went back!
But yes, the grey solid wheels are much more attractive than the black vented's.

And to think I thought I was the only one! I took the TZD trims off before I got the Speedlines as I thought they looked naff... The non vented steels reminded me of my Dad's GSA!
