BX 16 auto engine and box.

Post by DavidRutherford »

From the fabled "Snoopy" BX that I broke up a while back. The 1.6 petrol engine and auto box are still in my garage, and quite frankly are completely in the way. I have absolutely no need for them, so if anyone wants them, they're free.

I have a lifting gantry, so can assist lifting into the back of your car/van. Come and take them away.

How hard to use the box to convert a manual diesel BX to automatic using that box do you think David? Cheers.

Not really possible: The ratios are all wrong.

Plus the differences between a diesel manual and a diesel auto are quite extensive. You'd need a lot more than just the gearbox.

Physically it'll bolt straight on, but it would make for a painful drive!
Smokes lots, because enough's enough already!

Far too many BX's, a bus, an ambulance a few trucks, not enough time and never enough cash...

Given that my "location" to the left there isn't quite accurate, I ought to just mention (for those who don't know) that I'm actually down in Dorset. About an hour south of Bristol, an hour north of Poole or about 1h45 from the M25.

Only by rendier and sledge.

What about a 1400 petrol with autobox conversion, or would that be painfull too?

Why convert? The carb on that needs attention (auto choke typically rubbish) but otherwise they're both low mileage and in good running order - or at least they were at the time of the crash 18 months ago.

Economy for the diesel route, road tax for the 1400 route.

You couldn't attach a 4HP to a TU engine without really re-engineering things, more cost and hassle that it's worth IMHO.

And the N/A diesel auto was a bit cack IMHO.

Now a TD auto, thats most certainly FTW!
I might build myself one oneday when the old leg dies once too often.
And of course a 16Valve auto !

auto cnversion

Post by velosolex50 »

I put an auto box out of a 19trs into a 19 tgd a couple of years ago (more or less the same gearing as the 19 trs is higher geared than other petrols), and it was pretty easy. BUT it wrecked the fuel economy (60 down to 40 mpg with same driver) and made the performance pretty poor. Very pleasant if you and all the people in the cars queueing up behind were patient.... Spoilt a nice car really. I think a TD would probably be ok to drive with an auto.

Probably due in the main to the fact that the auto will not change into 4th until 42mph and drops out again when speed reduces to 38mph. :(

David/Stuart, what condition was the ignition, HP pump, FDV and Starter before taking off the road?

If noone can take it all I'd be interested in these parts.

Oh, it's better than ok, Citroen REALLY should have built them, a proper made for the job autobox on a TD in a BX is a resplendant thing to drive.
