A simple problem... I can't get my steering wheel out

Post by Matt H »

After my rather good haul of parts courtesy of Kitch the other day, I thought I'd make a start on the Dash... However I have fallen at the first hurdle.

Removing the Steering wheel.

I have done this many times in the past, and it was unpleasant then, but this time the thing is well and truly stuck. I am worried that if I use too much brute force, I might do some damage...

All I wanted to know is, are there any specialist tools, or techniques to help me get it off properly. I have seen loads of steering wheel pullers and stuff online, but none of these seem compatible...

I could really do with some help, as I wanted to put a proper 16v wheel in anyway... and I can't see how I can change the dash without taking the wheel out.

Regards,
Matt

put the nut back 2 or3 turns and give it a wack with a FBH that usually works if you are not worried about damage then a couple of crow bars either side or last resort heat.

I usually remove the nut totally, then whack the back of it at the 4 and 8 o'clock positions repetitively one side then the other at speed until it comes off. Usualyl works, but hurts if it takes time

rock the steering wheel from side to side and top to bottom....rock it to loosen it as opposed to trying to pull the thing straight off

Leave the nut on the end of the shaft while 'persuading' the wheel to come off. That way, when it does come loose, it just bangs up against the nut rather than smashing your teeth in.....

Did this the other day on my ZX, wanted to fit a BX steering wheel from a scrap yard but it wouldn't fit :(

You've got to push and pull. You said you've done it before so I hope you know what I mean? Push on one side and pull on the other, then reverse, and repeat. Worked for me, should work for you too, if not I wouldn't know what to suggest.

This.

I had a Talbot "T" embossed on my forehead for a week once after not leaving the nut a couple of turns on the steering shaft.

Best way I've found is to pre-load the steering wheel at one point, and then belt it with a rubber mallet on the opposite side. Obviously this works better on steering wheels with more than one spoke, but the theory should still work fairly well.

I've always used Bandits method. But you have to be quite ruthless and violent at the same time. If the cars not shaking you're not doing it hard enough! (She said with a grunt  )
