GEARBOX OIL CHANGE

Post by Chris Abbott »

How often should the oil be changed in the gearbox? Its a 1905cc non turbo engine and a manual box. Also anybody got thoughts on the best G/box oil to use? Thanks

I change mine every 10K miles.
Much sooner than recommended, but even after 10K miles the old is a bit wanky.

The only oil to use is Total BV gear oil, as the box was designed for.
Whatever you do, do not use semi synthetic gearoil.
Smokes lots, because enough's enough already!

Far too many BX's, a bus, an ambulance a few trucks, not enough time and never enough cash...

You say that...

Did you know that the early BE1/4 and 1/5 gearboxes as used in Horizon and Visa had a spec of 15w-40 engine oil? AFAIK, there was no differences made to the gearbox when the spec was changed to Total BV oil.

I've run every BE gearbox I've had on 15w-40 engine oil.....

This I did not know!
Interesting...
I wonder if that would make the change a tad slicker?
hhmm...

Certainly with 15w-40 in it, it's impossible to beat the synchromesh in my current BX, regardless of how stupidly violent I am with it.

... and it's a lovely change, hot or cold.

GEARBOX OIL CHANGE

Post by Chris Abbott »

Ive got quite a low mileage Bx, and studying the service history it was changed at 6k- (one of the 1st couple of services) in 1992. Im now coming up to 40k and think it should be changed ,mainly for peace of mind. The gear change is smooth at present- so i feel i should use what ever citroen recommended, i do realize that technology has moved on and the oil they recommended could be old hat now. What a bunch of good guys you seem to be!! Already im worrying about something i might not even have to change!!! (But i do fancy that Total stuff thou) Thanks Chris

I might have a go at that then, I can beat the synchro in the valver, and the synchro's are getting well tired in the TD already!

Any specific spec, or just any old 15/40??
