Your opinions?

Post by Tourist »

OK I thought it might be a good idea to explain my turbo problem in more detail, so maybe someone can work out what's wrong.

With the engine running, if I give it a few revs I can hear the turbo spinning, so I know that it's working but not delivering power. This is probably good, as it means the turbo is working at least.

There's no indication of an air leak, or should I say I can't hear one. Engine sounds fine and no longer smokes which is also good - I think it needed a good run.

So to put it simply the turbo is spinning, but not delivering any power. I've been told it could be the wastegate, or a leak somewhere, but I think the first is more likely seeing as I can't hear anything.

This is my first turbo car, and I'd really like it to actually have a turbo! I'm not paying criminal sums of insurance money to drive something that's slower than my ZX was.

If you have any ideas, please let me know. Then I can get some kind of idea as to the extent of my problem.

Are you sure it's not pulling as it should? Because every TD I've driven hardly lights up the wheels when the turbo does spool! The power is much more evenly spread across the rev range, where as in the 1.9TD you boot it, nothing happens, then the turbo winds up and it has all it's power. It lasts for about 2000rpm and then it's flat again.

I've never had a wastegate stuck, but I have had the diaghram fail that adds extra fuel during boost - thus effectively no turbo - and it was a real slouch!

These old tzd's have the old fashioned boosty surge unlike modern diesels which have a much more linear power delivery. However that does only tend to happen in 1st & 2nd gear, anything higher & its a lot lot less of surge. If its not doing that then there deffo is a problem, i'd suggest following David's guidance supplied so far.

Keep us informed of how you get one & keep posting up everything that you've checked etc...that way the mechanics amongst us (not me by the way  ) can offer some more advice.

/\ DAvid's advice i think. look at the fuel pump, there will be a rubber pipe on the front that comes down from the intercooler. undo the jubilee clip, free the pipe and start the engine. raise revs under the hood and see if you're getting a blast of air from that hose. If you are, the turbo is working. Then it is probably the over-fuelling device that is not sensing that air flow in the pipe through a ruptured rubber diaphragm, and hence not delivering extra fuel to the engine, which is where you get your turbo power.

Its not a job you can do yourself, you'll need a diesel fuel pump specialist to look at it - they are around - trucks often need their bits doing!

Another test is to drive the car with this hose detached and it should drive like a 1769 non turbo engine, so then you know if you have any power or no extra power at all from the turbo.

Hope this helps :)

I'm in a place called Watlington, the smallest town in England or atleast it used to be, it's about 15 miles from Oxford city.

If there's anyone near me, I need help!

Well how about try that, and then others can use the results/symptoms to diagnose further
